GCSE – Religious Studies

Introduction

The RS Department offers two pathways at GCSE level:

1. CCEA GCSE Religious Studies

During Year 11 students will complete Unit 5: Christianity through a Study of the Gospel of Mark. They will complete five topics:

· The Identity of Jesus

· Jesus the Miracle Worker

· The Teaching of Jesus

· The Death and Resurrection of Jesus

· The Role and Nature of Christian Discipleship

 

During Year 12 students will complete Unit 6: An Introduction to Christian Ethics. They will complete five topics:

· Personal and Family Issues

· Matters of Life and Death

· Developments in Bioethics

· Contemporary Issues in Christianity

· Modern Warfare

 

Assessment

Students will complete one written exam at the end of Year 11 and Year 12, lasting 1 hour and 30 mins. Each exam is worth 50% of their final GCSE grade.

No Coursework or Controlled Assessment.

 

 

2. OCN NI Level 2 Certificate in Religious Studies

This qualification provides students who may struggle with the demands of written examinations the opportunity to achieve a Level 2 Certificate in Religious Studies which is equivalent to a grade B at GCSE Level. Students study nine units and complete a portfolio of work for each unit. This work is assessed on a pass/fail basis. There is no external written examination. 100% of the qualification is gained through the completion of the portfolio work and all nine pieces must be submitted and meet the required standard to achieve a pass.

Nine units are covered over two years. These are

  • Exploring Personal Identity and Faith
  • Addiction
  • Charity and Religious Charities
  • Exploring Religious Traditions within Own Community
  • Life and Death Issues
  • Life of a Famous Person of Faith
  • Marriage and Divorce
  • Prejudice and Discrimination
  • World Faith
