Public Speaking & Debating

Co-ordinator: Miss Mary Gallagher

Public Speaking and Debating have been enjoyable, challenging and successful extra-curricular activities, in our school, for many years.  The pupils enjoy entering a variety of competitions throughout the year including: Internal Loreto Public Speaking Contests, The Soroptomist International, The National Road Safety, The Environmental Youth Speak and The Mary Ward Public Speaking Competitions.  Pupils also get opportunities to attend workshops and extra-curricular sessions to improve and polish their public speaking and debating skills.

Alexander Gregg said, “There are three things to aim at in public speaking:

first, to get into your subject, then to get your subject into yourself,

and lastly, to get your subject into the heart of your audience”.

Well done to Rona Anderson, Nicola Donnelly and Lara Hand who took part in The Soroptomist International Public Speaking Competition on Monday,19th November,2007.

Congratulations, girls!

26/02/2008 COLERAINE HOSTS LORETO PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITION

The annual Mary Ward Public Speaking competition, which brings together students from Loreto Schools in the North West, was hosted by Loreto College, Coleraine on Tuesday, 26th February, 2008. The competition, in which students from the Castlerock Road School competed against representatives of Loreto Grammar School, Omagh, Loreto Secondary School, Letterkenny and Loreto Primary, Letterkenny, seeks to strengthen links between Loreto schools in Ireland and also to raise student awareness of the founder of the Loreto Order, Mary Ward.

Students in the Junior section (Primary school) were asked to speak on the topic of “Mary Ward: a Woman for all Seasons.”  This trophy was deservedly won by Loreto Primary, Letterkenny.

Entrants for the Intermediate (Years 8-10) class spoke on the topic: “Mary Ward is possibly the most remarkable Englishwoman of the 17th Century.” Hannah McGirr (year 10) and Antoinette McGettigan (year 10), both of Loreto Grammar School, Omagh took first and second place respectively.  Cathy McSorley (year 8), Nola McDermott (year 9) and Aoibheann Laird (year 10) also represented our school, in this section, and deserve credit for being so successful in our internal heats.

Finally, in the Senior Section (Years 11-14), congratulations to Rona Anderson for taking first place. Alice McGirr, also from Loreto, Omagh was placed second.  Both girls dealt with the topic: “Mary Ward is as relevant today as she was in the 17th Century”.  Well done to Edel Loughran (year 11), Rhona Hunter (year 11) and Leah Bogues (year 11) for also representing the school, in this section, after being successful in our internal heats.

Miss Gallagher accompanied the group on the day and commented that the pupils had been “exemplary”. Mrs Frances Pepin, acting co-ordinator of Public Speaking at the College for the day, commented that the day had been most successful and enjoyable, and thanked all three adjudicators for their hard work in selecting winners from among the talented speakers who took part.

Student Quotations

Public speaking provides an opportunity to give your view and opinions on chosen topics. I feel public speaking gives you confidence and high self esteem. I think everyone should try it, it doesn’t take up much time and it provides a sense of accomplishment and is an opportunity to meet lots of new people and the girls involved are definitely a lot of fun!

Rona Anderson

Public speaking can be a very eye opening experience. You learn about the subject you are talking about, and I enjoyed standing up in front of an audience and expressing myself. I got to meet other people, and listen to other public speakers and make points about the subject you talk about. I would recommend public speaking as it improves your confidence.
